Aquaculture & growing population
We don’t have to be told that the world’s population is growing. It’s obvious. In fact, it is expected to reach approximately 10 billion by 2050. Needless to say that a rise in proteins is necessary. Any type of protein would “help”. But why is it that in particular the aquaculture industry plays a crucial role in helping to feed a planet with an ever-growing population? Curious? Continue reading to learn about the most important reasons.
- More people means more living quarters. Traditional land-based agriculture consumes more than half of all developed land. Besides that, there is great potential to reduce pressure on limited land-based resources by farming fish more often in the ocean. In short, land-based surface is required for the growing population; great if we can cultivate more and more proteins in the ocean.
- Aquaculture diminishes the pressure on wild caught species. Nowadays wild stocks of many fish and seafood species are under massive “constraint”. 33% of wild fish stocks have already got to their biological limit because of “catastrophic” fishing practices and excessive fishing. As a consequence, wild fish stock do not have the time to “restock” themselves before they are being caught again. Simply said, if we would only be consuming wild caught fish and seafood, the supply will most probably continue to go down whereas the population is growing. Aquaculture is a great alternative, or at least a great addition.
Fish and seafood farmers are needed to help meet the growing protein consumption.
Why are we communicating this? Because seafood is our passion. Besides its delicious taste, there are so many more reasons to consume seafood. And it might help you marketing the consumption of your product.
